The fight against mosquitoes: two decrees issued in force. Azimuth treatments are also underway

From May 1 to October 31, two decrees for the prevention and control of diseases transmitted by insect vectors and especially the tiger mosquito will be in force. (aedes albopictus) and the common mosquito (culex spp.), targeting citizens and businesses and owners of regularly flooded areas (water storage tanks, mining excavations, crops requiring immersion, etc.).

The aim is to eliminate any micro-outbreak, but it is necessary for everyone to follow the provisions, emphasizing the importance of citizens carrying out preventive and curative measures in their areas of competence, non-compliance of which means an administrative fine that can range from 103 to 516 euros. In addition, random checks are envisaged. For this reason, it is useful to keep a calendar with the dates of the treatments performed. Indeed, any encroachment on the public realm may not be exhaustive given the vastness of private realms. Stagnation of water that cannot be removed must be continuously treated with anti-larva preparations distributed free of charge at decentralized municipal offices and on sale in pharmacies and agricultural consortia.

In short, among other things, you must:

avoid permanently or temporarily leaving containers of any nature and size in public and private open spaces in which rainwater may collect and prevent any accumulation of stagnant water;
empty all water accumulated in containers to prevent stagnation after rain;
treat the water present in manholes, drain grates, sumps for collecting rainwater and any other single-use containers (including fountains and pools that are not in use) using products with guaranteed larvicidal efficacy;
keep the courtyards and open areas clear of weeds, brush and rubbish of all kinds and maintain them in such a way as to prevent stagnation of rain water or any other source;
empty fountains and pools that are not in use or have adequate larvicidal treatment;
prevent puddles from forming in trenches, containers, tires and other containers;
inside cemeteries, if water treated with larvicidal preparations is not available, flower vases must be filled with wet sand; alternatively, the water in the vase must be treated with a larvicidal product at each change. If fake flowers are used, the vase must still be filled with sand if placed outside;
operators of greenhouses, nurseries, plant and flower shops and similar activities must carry out properly planned larval control to prevent the overpopulation of native mosquitoes and the introduction of exotic mosquito species;
for the increasingly widespread automatic garden sprayers of anti-mosquito products (adulticides and insect repellents), citizens are expected to inform the municipality and local health authority of the location and technical characteristics of the system and the exclusive use of products regularly authorized for outdoor areas and non-professional use.

The implementation of adulticidal treatment in private premises must also be notified in advance, at least 5 days before the treatment, by sending the form “Notification of adulticidal treatment against mosquitoes and other insects of public interest”:

  • to the City of Ravenna at the address: Environment and Territory Protection Service, viale Berlinguer 30 or by fax at No. 0544-546138 or PEC at the address:ambiente.comune.ravenna@legalmail.it;

    Meanwhile, anti-mosquito treatments with Azimut have been taking place throughout the municipality since Monday, April 15, and will continue at regular intervals until September.
